German painter, sculptor, visible artist, and poet, Max Ernst was born on April 02, 1891, in Bruhl, near Cologne, Germany, to Philipp Ernst, a teacher of the deaf & amateur painter, and Luise Ernst, a German visible artist, painter, poet, & sculptor. Max was a principal form in 'Dada' and 'Surrealist' movements and enjoyed a startling range of styles and techniques. In 1909, Max Ernst joined the University at Bonn to study psychiatry and philosophy. He, however, quit the policy the same year and took to his true calling, artistry. He had to put his art vocation on hold during the World War I, as he had to serve the German army.

Post war, Ernst, along with Jean Arp and public activist, Alfred Grünwald, formed the 'Cologne, Germany Dada Group.' In 1918, the artist married art historian, Luise Straus. In 1919, Ernst and Paul Klee experimented with 'mixed media.' In 1920, Ernst had a son; and the wedlock did not last long after that. Max made a series of collages, employing illustrations from healing and technical magazines to originate an uncanny juxtaposition of images. In 1922, he returned to the artistic community at Montparnasse Quarter in Paris and drifted towards the 'Surrealistic' movement. Ernst completed his first 'Surrealist' painting, "Les Hommes n'en sauront rein" in 1923, which possessed all the safe bet facets of the movement, such as the illusory atmosphere, the illustration of celestial phenomena, the desert landscape, and the central eroticism.

In 1925, Max pioneered a new visible Arts technique, 'Frottage,' wherein he would place tiles, sheets of paper, or bricks. He would then rub them with graphite to collect bizarre, obsessive shapes. Ernst usually applied a concentrate of these 'Frottage' designs, pooled with other techniques. In 1926, the experimental artist, in collaboration with Joan Miro, went on to pioneer the 'Grattage' (scratching the surface of a painting) and Decalcomania (pressing paint between two surfaces) techniques of art. Ernst had a strong fascination for birds. This was obvious from "Loplop," a bird like character, which the artist advanced and presented as his representative self. The same year Max Ernst painted his controversial, "The Virgin Chastises the baby Jesus before Three Witnesses: André Breton, Paul Éluard, and the Painter." In 1927, he married Marie-Berthe Aurenche, which is also said to be an inspirational cause towards his erotically deflected mood, as is obvious in "The Kiss." In 1932, Max's first American show was held at the Julien Levy Gallery, New York, with 1934 witnessing his flair on sculpturing.

During the Wwii, Max moved to the United States with Guggenheim in 1941. In 1942, the concentrate married, though this wedding too had a short life. All straight through his Us stint, Max interacted with discrete junior artists, shared his principal experiences, and left a deep impact & work on on the development of 'Modern Art' and 'Abstract Expressionism.' In October 1946, Max married Dorothea Tanning and the concentrate stayed in Arizona. In 1948, Ernst's treatise, "Beyond Painting," gained him fame and money. In 1953, the concentrate moved to France with the artist creating the very famous, glass made chess game, "Immortal" in 1966.

Some of the Max's principal pieces are, "And the butterflies began to sing (1929)," "Capricorn (1948)," "Loplop (1930)," "The Robing of the Bride (1940)," "Two Children Are Threatened by a Nightingale (1924)," and "The Wood (1927)." In 1954, the competent artist won the Venice Biennale. Max Ernst died on April 01, 1976, in Paris, France, one day before his 85th birthday. He was buried in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery.
